There is no new art anymore.
Sturtevant recreates famous artworks not by copying them directly but by reimagining
them from memory, challenging the notion of originality. She even took her ex-husband’s name
as her artist identity—a bold move for the “queen of copycat.”
This installation reinterprets Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s lightbulb piece, where each bulb’s limited
lifespan mirrors the fragility of human life. Sturtevant’s work reflects how art endlessly inspires
art, hinting that true originality might be impossible. Each idea fuels the next, creating a
continuous cycle.
The choice of lightbulbs struck me. Lightbulbs, symbols of humanity’s triumph over darkness,
are now tangled in environmental issues due to our dependence on electricity. In this
installation, the bulbs descend in orderly strands, only to form a chaotic tangle at the base—just
as our initial progress now spirals into complex problems.
I see each bulb as a life, each life sparking new ideas, forming society. The tangle below is both
chaotic beauty and disorder. How do we honor each light, each life, without losing our
individuality? How do we coexist, letting each bulb shine while valuing the collective glow?
These are the questions I’m left pondering.
