リオデジャネイロ五輪で8月19日、陸上男子の400メートルリレー決勝が行われた。日本（山縣亮太、飯塚翔太、桐生祥秀、ケンブリッジ飛鳥）は予選でマークしたアジア記録を塗り替える37秒60で走り、銀メダルを獲得した。
アンカーで、ジャマイカのウサイン・ボルト選手と張り合ったケンブリッジ飛鳥選手が、「彼は何者だ？」と世界中で話題になっている。「彼はジャマイカ人の父、日本人の母をもち日本で育ったのだ」といったケンブリッジ選手に関する情報を紹介するメディアやユーザーの姿もネット上では多く見受けられた。
試合翌日に開催された記者会見では「ボルト選手と並んだとき、一瞬いけるかと思ったが離された。それは悔しいけど、このメンバーで銀メダルがとれて嬉しい」とケンブリッジ選手はレースを振り返った。
