いよいよこの日曜日から始まるツアー・オブ・ジャパン。今年新設された京都ステージ、そしてその先にあるルートを地元の三船雅彦さん Masahiko Mifune が案内したライドのドキュメントを紹介します。レースコースはもちろん、近くに広がる道は最高のライドロケーションでした。Raphaのモデルとしてもお馴染みのベン・リーバーソンがこのライドに参加。その日を文章でで振り返ります。辻啓 Kei Tsuji - Cycling and Photography の美しい写真とともにお楽しみください。

日本のような、時と場所を隔てた遠い場所へと旅をすることは、気後れもするし最高の体験でもあるとおもう。自分のいつものサイクリング環境を離れた旅路で出会う、予期せぬことや未知のもの。それは時として異国の地をライドする理由のひとつでもある。

大阪に着いた際に見た、都市に沈みゆく夕日はそれだけで素晴らしいものだった。親しみやすい笑顔の日本を代表する世界で活躍中のフォトグラファー、ケイ（辻啓）が暖かく出迎えてくれる。彼もまた、私のように旅に生きる人だ。郊外へと連れて行かれ、日が暮れる頃には京都北部へとたどり着いた。そこにはRapha Japanのダイスケとヒロの歓待があった。

これから何が起こるのか、なんとなくわかり始めていた。

遅くにベッドに入り、朝早く起きるのはサイクリストのアルゴリズム。朝食は日本食。ミューズリーもクロワッサンもここには無いが、豆腐にお米、魚はずらりと並ぶ。エネルギーを充電し、コーヒーが気力も充実してくれた。

集合地点は駐車場の隅、そこにはライドの支度を整えて談笑しているサイクリストの姿が見える。フム、サイクリストであれば世界中のどこにいてもこの光景に馴染みを覚えるというものだ。

ほとんどが初対面の中、数名は見知った顔もあり、ワクワクしてくる。地元のライダーと旅行者ライダーが一緒になって素晴らしい景色へと走り出したのだったが、それを先導するのはこの地の伝説的サイクリスト、マサヒコミフネ（三船雅彦）氏である。

この日のライドをなんと言ったらよいだろう。ライドのスタートは、ツアー・オブ・ジャパン京都ステージで使用される周回をまず走ったのだったが、まず素晴らしかった。そしてルートを離れてからはこれまでに見たことの無い風景の広がる信楽の田舎道へと入っていった。急峻な丘陵に茶畑が広がる様は見応えがあり、地形は印象的でシャープだった。細い急な登りや、竹林、みずみずしい緑色の畑、見通しのよい風景……そのすべてがあった。

この異国のライドで一番気づかされたことは、私たちを一体化させる共通の紐帯があったということ。日本人でも、英国人でも、オーストラリア人でも、私たちはバイクに乗ることを愛している……どこから来たか、それが誰かなんてことは関係ない。ペダルが回り始めれば、たちまちプロトンが形成されるのだ。一体となったライダーのグループは時おりハードにプッシュもするが、しかしそうして素晴らしい体験と友情を共にもしているのだった。このグループの一人になれたことに祝福された気分になり、スペシャルなライドに素晴らしい格別なルート体験をする中で、日本のユニークな田舎道を走る機会は、多くの人に提案されるべきだと思った……。真のインターコンチネンタル、大陸を越えていく経験がそこにはあった。

Traveling across time and space to a place as far away and as different as Japan is both a daunting and exciting experience. The unexpected and unknown are things that we encounter when we venture out from our own cycling backyard, they are also some of the reasons we find ourselves trying to venture out and ride in different locations.

Arriving in Osaka as the sun set on an amazing metropolis was impressive to say the least. The friendly face of local/international photographer and good guy, Kei was a welcome sight for a traveling man like myself. As night fell we disappeared off through the sprawling suburbs to end up north of Kyoto and rendevouz with two more familiar and welcoming smiles in the form of Daisuke and Hiro from Rapha Japan.

I was starting to come to the understanding of what was taking shape.

Late to bed early to rise is an algorithm i have learned to roll with. Japanese breakfast not so much.

Muesli and a croissant are not on offer here,rather an array of tofu,rice, fish and savory fare. We fueled up and there was coffee so i had at least a toe hold.

My bike had made the journey in one piece so it was time to put it together and kit up,

The rally point was a corner of the car park and i could see a group of riders chatting and making ready to ride.. great,this is a familiar sight to a cyclist wherever you are.

Lots of new faces and one or two familiar ones and excitement and expectation, a gathering of locals and travelers who had come together to explore some amazing landscape shown to us by legendary cyclist Mr Masahiko Mifune.

Wow, what can i say.. we started out on the road race circuit for the upcoming Olympus road race which was great, then we headed off into the countryside and dissapeared into some totally new and for me unseen landscape. Green tea growing on steep hillsides was spectacular and the topography was fantastic and sharp. Steep pitches small roads, bamboo forests, lush vegetation and grand vistas were all there.

What i realized most on this journey in a foreign land was that there is a common bond that ties us all together. Be it Japanese, English, Australian, We love to ride bikes… It does not matter where you come from or who you are, once the pedals turn we all become the peloton.. a cohesive group of riders pushing each other but also sharing great experiences and camaraderie. I felt truly blessed to be a part of this group, invited along on a special ride on some great and remote roads to experience the unique countryside Japan has to offer.. a truly Intercontinental experience.
